Looking after your retainers

Looking after your retainers

Once your braces have been removed and your teeth are in their new, straight position that’s the end of your orthodontic treatment, right? Wrong! The next step is perhaps the most important stage of your treatment.

After your braces have been taken off you will be fitted with a retainer. This is a mouth guard-like appliance which you should wear from now on as it helps to keep your teeth in position. For the first week it is advisable to wear your retainer all day and all night. After the first week, you can just wear it at night. It’s important you wear it on a regular, if not daily, basis to ensure the results of your orthodontic treatment are kept. Failing to wear your retainer could see your teeth move back into their original, crooked, position.
